SINGAPORE, 25 July 2025 — T.H.E Dance Company is taking its acclaimed site-adaptive work Searching Blue《寻蓝》, choreographed by Founding Artistic Director Kuik Swee Boon, on tour again, this time to Malaysia and Australia.
This next chapter follows a growing international journey for the work. Since premiering in Singapore in 2023 at Goodman Arts Centre, Searching Blue has toured Southeast Asia with performances in Penang, Bandung, and Jakarta. In 2024, an excerpt was presented at ArtScience Museum, where it was described by The Straits Times as “a surprisingly visceral and kinaesthetic experience… making its complex concepts tangible by adjusting for different spaces and involving the audience.”
The upcoming international tour will bring Searching Blue to:
Batu Pahat, Malaysia – 25 & 26 July 2025
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 17–19 October 2025 at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac)
Adelaide, Australia – 23–25 October 2025 at OzAsia Festival
The Batu Pahat performance will mark the 85th anniversary of Chinese High School—Kuik Swee Boon’s alma mater and the place where he spent his formative years.
Speaking on the return, Swee Boon shares:
“Returning to Batu Pahat, where I once worked in a garment factory, dyeing plant, and even as a farmer at seventeen, has been deeply moving. This journey reminds me to stay humble and grounded, and to cherish every moment.”
The Kuala Lumpur leg of the tour marks the Malaysian venue debut of Searching Blue, with performances at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac). This presentation continues T.H.E’s ongoing efforts to connect more closely with regional audiences and artistic communities in Southeast Asia.
The tour will culminate in Adelaide, Australia, with Searching Blue presented at OzAsia Festival from 23–25 October. Held annually in Adelaide, OzAsia is Australia’s leading contemporary arts festival engaging with Asian and Asian-Australian creators across dance, theatre, music, and visual arts. T.H.E will perform outdoors at Festival Plaza in the heart of the city—a high-traffic civic space that aligns with the work’s site-immersive nature. This appearance also marks the company’s return to the festival following the 2023 staging of Infinitely Closer as part of the festival’s official programme.
Searching Blue unfolds as a site-immersive experience, shaped by the HollowBody methodology developed by Kuik and the company. Audiences begin seated, gradually becoming part of the evolving landscape as performers shift through the space, inviting reflection on presence, relationship, and interconnectedness.
Live music is performed by Malaysian sound artist Kent Lee, whose distinctive soundscape blends live vocals with traditional and contemporary instruments such as the handpan and jaw harp. Moving fluidly with the performers, Lee leads the audience through the shifting landscape of the work—drawing them into a shared sonic journey that unfolds in real time.
The concept of Searching Blue has been shaped from the beginning by Kuik’s longstanding interest in The Extended Mind Thesis by philosophers Andy Clark and David Chalmers, as well as neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor’s My Stroke of Insight. These works explore the idea that consciousness is not confined to the body alone, but emerges through connection with people, space, memory, and the environment.
