T.H.E Premieres re: intertwining—A Radical Encounter Dissolving Hierarchies Between Collaborators
Singapore, 5 March 2025 (Wednesday) — T.H.E Dance Company invites audiences to experience re: intertwining, a compelling exploration of identity, collaboration, and coexistence. This experimental cross-disciplinary dance production will run from 4—6 April 2025 at the Esplanade Theatre Studio.
re: intertwining dissolves boundaries between dance, sound, light, and voice in a space where creation is alive. Directed and choreographed by Kuik Swee Boon, this exploratory work gathers T.H.E’s dance artists with a cross-disciplinary team, each stepping beyond traditional roles to explore identity and connection.
Performed live over 65—80 minutes, the production is a testament to the power of artistic risk-taking. Guided by Kuik’s vision, the choreography is developed collaboratively, reflecting the dynamic interplay between individuality and collective synergy.
In a distinctive departure from conventional productions, re: intertwining brings its creative collaborators directly into the spotlight. Sound artist Kent Lee shapes the soundscape in real time, responding to shifts in energy. Lighting designer Adrian Tan sculpts the atmosphere through light and shadow. Theatre practitioners Neo Hai Bin and Seren Chen layer text and voice, adding depth to the work’s themes. They will perform live on stage alongside T.H.E Dance Company’s artists, Klievert Jon Mendoza, Haruka Leilani Chan, Chang En, and Carmelita Nuelle Buay.
Audiences are invited to navigate the space freely, encountering individual expressions that clash and coexist. This is more than a performance—it is the beginning of a journey that raises more questions than answers. re: intertwining asks: How do we co-exist, create, and shape one another in shared time and space? Does coexistence diffuse tension, or will the search for harmony reveal deeper uncertainties?
Kuik Swee Boon shares, “At its core, the relationship between The Self and The Other is one of profound symbiosis. Yet, it is difficult to fathom how we find ourselves ensnared in such a dire struggle for coexistence. This plight seems to stem from the very moment we chose to view the other as a rival, heralding a ruthless competition that unwound a cascade of consequences. In this new creation, I seek not only to delve deeper into the intricate tapestry of The Self and The Other but to also ponder whether we can conjure a reality in which the other is not a tormentor, but rather a fellow artist in this shared exploration.”
