praxis.1

What happens when dancers keep learning, practising and pushing themselves into new territory? praxis.1 brings together performers from T.H.E’s Training Initiative (TI), second company and main company for an intimate studio sharing. Rooted in the idea that knowledge is shaped through practice, praxis.1 offers a glimpse into the performers’ renewed selves after being refined by time, training, knowledge and guidance. 

Across the programme, the works themselves are at different stages; from well-established repertoire from over a decade ago to works in early development. This offers different perspectives on the creative process.

TI Group 1 will perform an excerpt from In the Distance (2016), a surrealistic exploration of migratory journeys choreographed by Sarah Foster-Sproull from New Zealand. TI Group 2 will present an excerpt from Parallels (2013), choreographed by T.H.E’s founding artistic director Kuik Swee Boon, a work born from gratitude towards the audiences, collaborators, contributors and fellow artists who have supported the company. 

The second company will present iSmellDanger, a new work at its first-phase of development by former T.H.E dance artist Ng Zu You. It examines the presence and implications of violence in everyday life.

The main company will present Ma (an exploration), the culmination of eight days of research with T.H.E’s resident choreographer Anthea Seah and T.H.E’s dance artists. Drawing from Anthea’s own experiences and the stories of others, Ma presents snapshots of the ugly, messy, frightening and uncertain transformation into motherhood through horror and surrealism. Witness how T.H.E’s dance artists return to a place of uncertainty and discovery as they build the work from the ground up with raw material, tasks and experimentation.
