Born in 1969 in Changhua, Taiwan, Chang Hui-Ni studied composition with Lin Chin-Yow, Pan Hwang-long and Lu Yen. In 1995, she received her MFA from the National Institute of the Arts (renamed Taipei National University of the Arts in 2001). From 2000 to 2001, she was a resident artist at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris following an appointment by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. During this time she also studied with Guy Reibel at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, and gave several performances in Paris and Rouen.
Chang has a diverse music practice, ranging from concert music compositions to collaborations with artists from different disciplines including theatre, dance, and film. In September 2013, she provided the improvisational music for the drama TAKE 321! during its live performance at the 6th Taipei Fringe Festival. In December, the National Taiwan University’s EMBA Chorus commissioned Chang to create a choral work, which was performed at the Taipei Zhongshan Hall.
As a teacher of music theory and composition at the Taiwan Theological College and Seminary, Chang is actively involved in music education, having also edited textbooks used in Taiwanese junior high schools. She is also an accompanist at the dance departments of various schools, including the Taipei National University of the Arts, Taipei Hwa-Kang Arts School and National Lan-Yang Girls’ Senior High School.
