Choreograher Boi Sakti began his dance training at the age of 17 in Indonesia and was the former Artistic Director of the Gumarang Sakti Dance Company. Sakti’s works have been performed extensively around the region and internationally including Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, American Dance Festival, Copenhagen International Theatre and Five Arts Centre in Malaysia. In addition to choreographing his own works for his own company, he has also worked with other dance and theatre companies such as TheatreWorks (Singapore), New Ensemble (Jakarta), Sardono Dance Company (Indonesia) and the Philippines Ballet amongst others. Underlying Sakti’s choreographic approach is an artistic philosophy that draws from the rich heritage of traditional dance in Indonesia and the aesthetics of contemporary movement. His unique aesthetic has won him awards and praise from critics, the most notable one being that Bessie Award in New York in 1991. |
